Iceland is an island that sits on top of two tectonic plates, the Eurasian plate and the North American plate. These plates are pulling apart from each other which means that Iceland is being torn in half at a rate of 2cm every year. The good thing is that the tear is being filled with lava that cool and turns into new rock. The tear has been growing for thousands of years and it has gotten so big you can stand in it. Another interesting fact about this site is that Icelandic parliament started and met here for hundreds of years. Can you picture our Prime Minister today sitting outside on a rock talking to his fellow politicians? Times sure have changed.

People walking between the plates. North American on your left. Eurasia on your right.

Standing on top of the Eurasian Plate. The new land forming between is much lower. |
